In the Attorney at Law Magazine’s “2024 Veterans in Law Issue,” Ball Janik LLP’s Attorney Michael E. Iles discusses how his time in the Navy informed his law practice. Iles shares that the skills he obtained in the service—including attention to detail, service to others, and self-discipline—have come in handy in his civilian career, where remaining calm under pressure is important for an attorney.
“One of the key lessons I apply to my practice today is that effective leadership and teamwork stem from a deep, nuanced understanding of the tasks and roles of those around you,” said Iles. “In the Navy, I learned that a command operates best when its leader takes accountability and understands the jobs beneath them, allowing for informed direction rather than leadership based solely on rank.”
Iles, who hails from a proud Navy family entailing several generations of service, said he initially joined the military to help him grow into adulthood. He says he was grateful for the opportunity to see the world while in the service. Working in demanding jobs under dangerous conditions also helped him become a more competent and resilient legal professional.
“My passion for justice was further fueled by iconic films like A Few Good Men and The Rainmaker, which highlight the pursuit of truth and holding powerful entities accountable,” said Iles. “Today, as an insurance recovery litigator, I feel like I’ve followed that same path of advocating for those who deserve justice.”
