Fatal Fort Lauderdale crane accident to have consequences for contractors, insurance

The recent crane accident at the construction site of Gables Riverwalk has sparked discussions about safety, insurance coverage and liability in the construction industry. Stephen Hauptman, a construction defect attorney who oversees the firm’s Ft. Lauderdale office, shared insights on the legal implications and contractual obligations of such incidents.

“There could be a lot of finger-pointing over who is at fault for this accident, with both the facts of the incident and contractual obligations coming into play,” said Hauptman. “For projects like this one, with a high-rise downtown, I would be very surprised if there wasn’t sufficient insurance coverage available.”

Hauptman also expects that OSHA will take a hard look at the practices for crane operations in downtown areas as a result of this accident.
