In an article published on 12/12 in the Legal Intelligencer, Ball Janik LLP Attorney Michael Iles discusses technological advancements in the legal industry, including the adaptation of AI. He advises that, rather than looking at AI as a tool that will take away jobs, it can help lawyers be more efficient by conducting legal research and writing faster and more efficiently.
“Because the younger generations are more likely to accept new technology, up-and-coming attorneys could increase productivity in ways you might not have imagined,” writes Iles. “Encouraging them on these paths will prime them for later succession planning as they grow and change right alongside the industry.”
Iles advises attorneys to continue growing throughout their careers by attending cybersecurity and data privacy seminars and educating themselves about the latest trends in providing innovative and value-added services to become subject matter experts. Furthermore, publishing and volunteering to speak at industry events with groups such as the American Bar Association (ABA) and the International Bar Association (IBA) allows attorneys to become industry changemakers and trendsetters. The article also emphasizes the importance of mentoring and succession planning.
“Learning is a lifelong process, especially for attorneys, and one that will benefit our legal industry,” Iles said. “Pay it forward by educating and encouraging others. Commit to improvement and stay resolute on this ceaseless journey.”
